As a caregiver, you have needs as well.

You are not alone in the help you give others…

worried woman coachingAs a caregiver, what you are going through is actually closely related to the concept of vicarious trauma.

When you are caring for someone day in and day out, often in a state of near crisis mode, and not often taking the time to take care of your own needs, it can affect the way you think, what you believe, and at times how you behave.

So, what is Vicarious Trauma or Secondary Traumatization Exactly?

Some signs of vicarious traumatization that a person may find themselves experiencing are…

Compassion Fatigue:
Compassion Fatigue is the condition of emotional and/or physical fatigue that results when caregivers of any capacity do not have time away from the caring of others to refuel and practice self care.

Burnout:
Burnout occurs when a person’s working environment is so stressful that they no longer see or feel the value in what they do and at times in themselves.

Common Signs of Vicarious Trauma that may apply to caregivers

  • experiencing feelings of anger, rage sadness
  • becoming overwhelmed
  • being preoccupied with thoughts of your loved one or care recipient

When we experience overwhelming volumes of information—especially information that holds an emotional charge—our bodies, minds, and spirit adapt to help us cope. At times, the way we cope may help in the moment but may also, in the long-term, have a greater negative effect on us. While there are signs you or a person you know may be dealing with vicarious trauma, everyone copes differently. If you notice any of your own experiences in the above list, this could indicate you are suffering from a form of vicarious trauma… please reach out, we know what you’re going through and we’re here to listen and support you.
